Evechinus chloroticus (Valenciennes, 1846)

Evechinus chloroticus is commonly known as kina (from the Māori name). This sea urchin is endemic to New Zealand. Kina have been a traditional component of Māori diet, but have been unsuccessful to Asian markets.

This sea urchin inhabit areas with moderate wave action,rocky and sandy seafloors ,feeding on large brown algae, red algae and encrusting substrate, but they are also omnivorous.

"If Evechinus chloroticus populations become out of control, kelp forest can be entirely eaten away, leaving bare rocks, also known as Kina Barrens."
