Peronia peronii (Cuvier, 1804)
Peronia peronii is a sea snail in the family Onchidiidae. Onchidiidae is a family of air-breathing marine and terrestrial snails. They do not have a shell. Onchidiidae is the only family in the superfamily Onchidioidea.
These snails are very unusual. Unlike almost all sea snails, they do not have gills. Instead, they are pulmonates. They are more closely related to air-breathing land and freshwater snails than to most other sea snails.
Adult Onchidiidae completely lack a shell, although a shell and operculum are present in the larval stage.
Most species in this family live by the sea in the intertidal zone. Many species live on rocky coasts. Others are found in mangrove forests, but also in brackish water. Remarkably, some Onchidiidae are completely terrestrial species.
All of these snails breathe air. The marine species feed during low tide.
Peronia peronii grows to be quite large, up to about 8 cm.
