Info

Polyclinum isipingense Sluiter, 1898

The sea squirt Polyclinum isipingense is so far only known from Mozambique in East Africa and from South Africa.

The colonies consist of large, thickly encrusted cushions, the upper side of which forms laterally flattened protrusions or continuous folds.

The living colony, although to a certain extent covered with fine particles of sand and shellfish, may be slightly brown, violet, green or grey in colour.

The branched openings are arranged in small circles and the central common cloacal openings are raised above the surface.

Polyclinum isipingense reaches a thickness of 8 - 18 cm and is mainly found in shallow rocky reefs.

The surfaces of the large colonies may be wavy or form uneven flat lobes. Slight depressions around small central elevations on the surface of the colony indicate the presence of the common cloacal systems.

There is no experience of keeping them, sea squirts require a continuous influx of plankton, which we aquarists usually cannot provide them with, in order not to endanger the entire biology of the tank.
