Lithothrix aspergillum is found only from British Columbia (Canada) to south to California on the west coast of the USA.
The alga is bright purple in color and settles on rocks and other solid substrate
in lower intertidal areas.

The thalli is loosely tufted and has numerous irregular lateral branches.
The lower segment of the alga contains the spherical calcified segments.
