The deep-sea gorgonian Narella aurantiaca is so far only known from the Musicians Seamounts, the Mussorgsky Seamounts, Nikumaroro (Kiribati), which belongs to the Phoenix Islands group, and from Wake, an atoll between Hawaiii and the Northern Mariana Islands.
Discovering finds and collecting deep-sea corals at the indicated depths is possible only with the help of an ROV; with the help of such special submarines, extreme depths of up to 11,000 meters can be explored.
Brittle stars have been regularly found on the colonies of Narella aurantiaca.
Etymology.
The species name "aurantiaca" is of Latin origin and means "orange colored", alluding to the orange color of the colony and its commensal ophiuroidea.
