In one or another description the color of this sea urchin is called "black", but in fact it is dark red-purple.
The sea urchin has spines 3-4 cm long.

Mesocentrotus nudus lives on rocky bottoms near the intertidal zone and grazes algae with the help of its powerful jaw, which is called the "lantern of Aristotle"
