Info

Chelidonichthys kumu is a large reddish to reddish-brown gurnard that becomes silvery-white on the belly, with a mostly smooth snout and a row of conspicuous bony scales along the dorsal-fin bases.
The insides of the pectoral fins are olive-green to grayish or purplish with scattered blue spots, a blue margin, and a large black spot, sometimes with white to bluish speckles near the base of the fins.

Adult gurnards prefer deeper nearshore waters, while juveniles primarily inhabit shallow bays, estuaries, and sandy coastal areas.

Because of its large diet, the gurnard is not suitable for home aquariums.

The species epithet "kumu" is a Latinization of the vernacular name (koumou) for this species in New Zealand.
