Info

Chondrocidaris gigantea A. Agassiz, 1863

Chondrocidaris gigantea is a species of sea urchin in the Cidaridae family. This species was first scientifically described by Alexander Agassiz in 1863.

It is a locally common species at greater diving depths. Chondrocidaris gigantea has robust, serrated spines, often covered with calcareous algae and invertebrates. The total diameter is approx. 25 cm (test approx. 7-10 cm diameter, remaining length concerns the spikes). These sea urchins can be found from Papua New Guinea to Hawaii and French Polynesia.
