Info

The American zoologist Frederick M. Bayer (* October 31, 1921 in Asbury Park; † October 2, 2007) described Anthothela tropicalis in 1962 in the essay "The shallow-water Octocorallia of the West Indian region. A manual for marine biologists", where the depth data were still given h in nautical fathoms (fathoms = fms), here 400 - 450fms which corresponds to about 219 - 246 meters.

The report "Octocorallia (Cnidaria) of the Gulf of Mexico" documented a much shallower occurrence of the coral of 165 meters (up to 823 meters) and the revision

For corals of the genera Anthothela and Victorgorgia, there was a revision in 2017, which now includes seven nominal species worldwide:
"A taxonomic revision of Anthothela (Octocorallia: Scleraxonia: Anthothelidae) and related genera, with the addition of new taxa, using morphological and molecular data" occupied depth data from 732 - 828 meters.

The description of the coral was based on fragments, so that a reliable size specification is unfortunately still missing today, the same applies to the color of the coral in the living state.

In any case, Anthothela tropicalis is an azooxanthellate deep-water coral.

Similar species: Anthothela tropicalis is the first find of the genus Anthothela in the Gulf of Mexico and is closely related to Anthothela pacifica (Kükenthal) from the Pacific coast, with which it forms a twin pair.
