Captive breeding / propagation

The offspring of Trophonopsis muricata are possible. Unfortunately, the number of offspring is not large enough to cover the demand of the trade. If you are interested in Trophonopsis muricata, please ask your dealer for offspring. If you already own Trophonopsis muricata, try breeding yourself. This will help to improve the availability of offspring in the trade and to conserve natural stocks.

Info

Trophonopsis muricata (Montagu, 1803)

Trophonopsis muricata is a marine gastropod in the family Muricidae, which are called spiny snails because of their more or less spiny shells. Members of the family have an operculum to close the shell opening. The predatory snails are widespread worldwide and feed on other invertebrates.

Ornamental oyster borer (Trophonopsis muricata) is a small predatory snail with a distribution area in sublittoral European waters, in the Mediterranean, in the Black Sea, in the northwest Atlantic off Portugal, Spain and the Azores.

Description: The size of the shell varies between 10 mm and 20 mm. The narrow, conical shell has seven or eight bulging whorls, crossed by numerous transverse ribs (15 to 20 on the penultimate vertebra), spiral ridges, and fine growth lines. These ribs are narrow, interacting with the spiral ribs and forming a deep reticular pattern with raised tubercles.

The thin outer lip is straight, notched and has internal grooves. The casing is characterized by a bend at the base of the siphonal canal. This siphon channel is about 25% of the length of the total length of the bowl, narrow and almost straight. The color of the shell is yellowish (often with spiraling brown stripes), flesh-colored or sometimes white. The living animal is light yellow or whitish.

The egg capsules are linear with an oval opening. Together with the spawn they contain a purple liquid.
