Martensia elegans Hering, 1841
The type locality for describing this alga is Port Natal (Durban, South Africa).
The elegant red alga occurs sporadically on some seaward reefs. The red algae grows on calcareous algae and on rock substrates. It prefers habitats that are well protected from direct sunlight, either in caves or under larger algae on rocky plains, under rocky outcrops and in rock crevices, as well as on the fan alga Avrainvillea amadelpha.
The individual thalli of the red algae look very different in color and shape. Some show a grid with balls sitting on it. The color is very variable from pink to purple to blue-green.
