Info

Emarginula fissura (Linnaeus, 1758)

Emarginula fissura is a sea slug belongs to the family Fissurellidae, the keyhole limpets. These limpets have a circular opening at the apical end of the shell, which serves both as an excurrent and anal opening.

Shell up to 15 mm long, with oval contour and raised, conical profile, tip located in the posterior third, never protruding beyond the posterior edge. Sculpture of numerous low radial ribs, alternately stronger and weaker, crossed by comarginal cords weakened at the top of the ribs. Slot narrow and deep. Color white.

Occurs from near the coast to approx. 150 m in the northern part of the distribution area, in the south mostly at depths of over 100 m. Maximum recorded depth 335 m.

WoRMS gives “Feeding type predator > on sessile prey” for the small snail = predatory, eats sessile organisms. More precise information about what the small snail feeds on is not known.
