Info
Scleracis guadalupensis forms small, red-colored colonies less than 10 cm long that branch dichotomously in one plane
Due to its small size, good lighting, high-resolution cameras and proximity to the seabed are necessary for identification in the sea, as Scleracis guadalupensis can easily be confused with Thesea rubra and other small red Plexauridae from a distance.
The depths at which this species occurs in the Atlantic and the Caribbean are astonishing:
SeaLifeBase gives a temperature range of between 0.3 - 10.4° Celsius and a depth range of 51 - 120 meters for the north-eastern USA and Canada.
In the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean and Brazil, the depth range is between 18 - 715 meters!
For the northern Gulf of Mexico near Florida, Ocean Data View indicates a maximum water temperature of ~ 24 + 25° Celsius at a depth of 18 meters.
The depth record is held by an occurrence around the Bahamas with 600-715 meters, here at 8.8° to 10.8 °Celsius
Further data:
Bermuda, North Carolina , Florida, Gulf of Mexico, 18-184 meters ; Bahamas, 600-715 meters ; Mexico, 174-348 meters ; Caribbean , 50-358 meters ; Costa Rica, 55-69 meters ; Brazil, 110 meters.
Scleracis guadalupensis is a really small coral, but very tough!
