Callyspongia (Euplacella) biru de Voogd, 2004
The type locality for the description of Callyspongia (Euplacella) biru are various places on Sulawesi Sea/Makassar Strait.
Description: The sponge grows encrusting at the base, but forms individual erect branches or masses of rounded, occasionally forked branches. The longest branch grows up to 40 cm long. The branched masses can reach a diameter of 10-150 mm. The oscules are sometimes slightly raised, numerous, distributed over the branches and have a diameter of 0.5-2 mm. When pressed or cut, Callyspongia (Euplacella) biru secretes a lot of mucus.
Color: Light blue. “Biru” is the Indonesian word for blue, also greyish-creamy
Surface: Visually smooth. Microhispid. Consistency: Spongy, typically Callyspongia-like.
Callyspongia (Euplacella) biru occurs from the Red Sea to the entire Indo-Pacific region. This branched sponge is very common on reef walls. It is very flexible and well adapted to strong currents. The encrusting form often grows on dead and living substrates. The cylindrical branches are often intertwined with other branch-forming species (Clathria cervicornis, Clathria reinwardti and Amphimedon paraviridis). Barnacles and bivalves often live on Callyspongia (Euplacella) biru.
Callyspongia (Euplacella) biru feeds on plankton and detritus.
Color blue to greyish-creamy.
