“Grandson of newspaper columnist discovers “fierce goby” – thus begins a report about Viktor Nunes Peinemann, who is currently doing his doctorate at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology.
Viktor Nunes Peinemann discovered a new species of goblin goby while diving, which was observed in the color morphs dark red and yellow-orange.
The new species was determined on the basis of 10 collected specimens. The author of the first description suggests that further specimens are needed to determine possible further color morphs.
The newly described goby was discovered in small caves and under overhangs in the Shark Reef off the Saudi Arabian coast, among coralline, crustose algae.
Sueviota aethon is probably endemic to the Red Sea!
Similar species: Sueviota pyrios Greenfield & Randall, 2017
Etymology. The specific epithet “aethon” is derived from the ancient Greek “Aethon”, one of the four horses of the sun god Helios.
The most similar species of Sueviota aethon, Sueviota pyrios Greenfield & Randall, 2017, is named after another of Helios' horses.
The colloquial English name “Grumpy dwarfgoby” refers to the seemingly grumpy and rather unhappy appearance of the fish, which is mainly due to the extremely upward-facing mouth position.
