Info

The spiny mackerel is perhaps better known to many under the name Carangoides armatus.

Atropus armatus is a pelagic species and inhabits rocky and coral-rich coasts as well as shallow bays and lagoons.
The mackerels are observed solitarily or in small groups, often along reef edges near the coast. Juveniles can be found in estuaries in brackish water and temporarily also in freshwater.

The color of longfin spiny mackerel varies with age, with the general coloration remaining grayish blue on top and turning to a whitish silver near the belly region.
Younger specimens are more silvery blue on the back and have six dark transverse stripes visible on the body behind the pectoral fin base.
There is a distinct blackish spot on the upper edge of the operculum.
The first dorsal fin is light gray to black, while the second dorsal fin and anal fin are hyaline to black.
The pectoral fins are dusty hyaline, the pelvic fins are mostly black with a white front edge, and the caudal fin is also hyaline with a dusty rear edge (source: Wikipedia).

The longfin trevally is a fast and persistent swimmer and the terror of all small reef fish.
The English name “longfin trevally” derives from the distinctly elongated dorsal and anal fin lobes, which are many times longer in juvenile fish.
