Info

The precious red coral Hemicorallium laauense, which lives in the deep sea, has long been overfished in the North Pacific for the jewelry and souvenir trade, but despite this fact, it is not on the IUCN Red List, for whatever reason.

This deep-sea beauty is currently only known from the depths around Hawaii, Johnston Atoll, and Midway Island in the northern to north-central Pacific.

Such remarkable deep-sea creatures are only known to humans through bycatch or targeted scientific expeditions, such as the NOAA Okeanos Explorer's excursions and its deep-sea boats, known as ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles), i.e., remote-controlled underwater vehicles.
Deep-sea expeditions by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in the US also bring us face to face with the beauty of the deep sea, including deep-sea creatures that have never been seen before.

Slat lives in water zones in complete darkness and feeds on organic suspensions.

The water temperatures are taken from Ocean Data View.
