Drs. Randall and Earle had already found two type specimens of Doryrhamphus aurolineatus in a cave at a depth of 11 meters on rocky ground in 1994.

Apart from this, no further information on the habitat of this species is known, and unfortunately, the first description of the sea needle does not appear to be freely accessible.

Whether the sea needle is extinct or has not been observed again due to a hidden lifestyle is also unknown.
