Info
The reef perch belongs to the Embiotocidae family, and there are two species of the genus Micrometrus worldwide, both of which are found in Mexican waters of the Pacific Ocean.
Micrometrus lat and Micrometrus minimus are of great scientific interest as they are among only one or two fish species worldwide whose males are born sexually mature, i.e., immediately ready to mate.
Adult reef perch are usually found in shallow rocky areas and tidal pools, hence the common name reef perch.
Females of the species carry the developing offspring and later release the young fish.
The reef perch is easily identified by the series of half-rings on the scales between the anal and pectoral fins and the black spots at the base of the pectoral fins, but it has no commercial or economic value and is of limited interest to most people.
Micrometrus aurora and Micrometrus minimus are also displayed in show aquariums, one example being the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.
Synonyms:
Cymatogaster minimus Gibbons, 1854 · unaccepted
Holconotus trowbridgei Girard, 1854 · unaccepted (misspelling)
Holconotus trowbridgii Girard, 1854 · unaccepted
