Info

The polychaete worms in the family Flabelligeridae have a distinctive cage of iridescent bristles around their mouth opening. This apparatus is used to filter plankton from the surrounding water.

They are usually introduced into our tanks hitchhiking on live rock, and the iridescent bristles are usually the only thing that gets noticed by the aquarist. Similar to some species of feather durster worms they live in crevices or holes, into which they can retract completely in case of danger.

Like many filter feeders that are introduced involuntarily into our tanks, the aquarium's biology decides about the survival of the animals - if no special food for filter feeders is being administered to the tank.
