Captive breeding / propagation

The offspring of Anthopleura ballii are possible. Unfortunately, the number of offspring is not large enough to cover the demand of the trade. If you are interested in Anthopleura ballii, please ask your dealer for offspring. If you already own Anthopleura ballii, try breeding yourself. This will help to improve the availability of offspring in the trade and to conserve natural stocks.

Husbandry

Anthopleura ballii (Cocks, 1851)

The column of this sea anemone is divided into scapus and capitulum, with a parapet and fosse. The scapus has vertical rows of small warts. The tentacles are moderate or long, fairly stout, arranged in multiples of six. Size up to 50mm across base, span of tentacles to 120mm. Two colour forms, brown or pale yellow

Commonly known as The Red speckled anemone, refers to the appearance of the column. The column, is covered with small warts arranged into 48 longitudinal rows.

It is found on rocky coasts from the intertidal zone down to depths of about 25 m.

Anthopleura ballii is gonochoric, with individuals being either male or female.
