Doto lancei was first described from Mexico.This species occurs from the Pacific coast of North America from San Diego south to Costa Rica.
Doto lancei has a cream coloured body and is highly pigmented (dark brown or black).This tiny nudibranch has 7 to 8 pairs of cerata,up to about 8 mm long Tubercles on the cerata have rings of dark pigment at their bases and a dark spot at the tip.
Sea slugs genus Doto feeds on hydrozoon polyps. It has been reported that Doto lancei feeds exclusively on the hydroid Aglaophenia sp.
