A small cardinalfish having many irregular white spots with reddish margins on a pale yellowish-tan background. The spots are noticeably smaller on the head than on the body.

Foa nivosa was described in 2011 from specimens collected at Palau, the Marshall Islands and Fiji, and specimens were recently identified from the Great Barrier Reef.
