Two spatially isolated populations of the bronze-striped grunt exist; one in the southern Gulf of Mexico, the other occurs from Colombia to Guyana.

Adults are silvery to silvery gray, with narrow brownish stripes along the scale rows on the sides of the body. At the base of the caudal fin is;
is a black spot.
The fins of adult fish are gray, the inside of the mouth is white.
Adult fish form schools.

In juveniles, 3 brownish-orange stripes are more prominent than in adults.
One stripe runs along the top of the head and back to the end of the dorsal fin, one runs above the eye back along the lateral line, which merges with the middle stripe under the soft dorsal fin.
The middle stripe merges into a double black spot at the base of the caudal fin.

Synonym: Pristipoma boschmae Metzelaar, 1919.
