Info
The holotype of this deep-water gorgonian was landed as early as August 6, 1902 off Nihoa Island, Hawaiiian Underwater Mountains, by the research vessel RV Albatros from a depth range between
1394 - 1829 meters landed.
The first describing scientist, Dr. Nutting, mentions that the "axis, bark and calyx (in alcohol) are creamy white," but he does not mention the living color. Dr. Bayer gave the color as "ivory white throughout."
The size of the incompletely landed coral is given in the initial description as 22cm and as incomplete. A look at the Hawaiii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) in situ photo indicates a much larger animal, but an exact size specification is missing.
Like all other Victorgorgia species, Victorgorgia alba is azooxanthellate, a cold water animal and not suitable for tropical warm aquaria, especially since there are no commercially available or live specimens.
Synonyms:
Anthothela nuttingi Bayer, 1956
Clematissa alba Nutting, 1908
Muriceides alba (Nutting, 1908)
