Pleurobranchus membranaceus (Montagu, 1816)
Pleurobranchus membranaceus is a large, round sea snail up to 12 cm long. The body consists of the brown mantle covered with short fleshy projections called tubercles and a white foot that forms a skirt around the mantle. The front end bears tentacles, the outer mouth tentacles and the rhinophores between them. The rhinophores consist of rolled extensions of tissue.
Pleurobranchus membranaceus has an internal shell. The flank gill snail is able to move by swimming. The beautiful white spawning spirals have a diameter of approx. 6 cm.
The cryptic snail is found together with its prey, the sea squirts Ascidia mentula, Ascidiella aspersa and Botryllus Schlosseri, in the intertidal and sublittoral zones on rocky ground.
