Info

It was first described as Leptoclathria haplotoxa Topsent, 1928, from Porto Santo, approximately 80 km northeast of Madeira, at a depth of 100 meters.
In September 2013, the first report came from the Ligurian Sea (Mediterranean) at a depth of 35 meters, which is a new discovery for the Italian sponge fauna and coral community.

Very little information is available about this small sponge species, including:

- Small, soft, crust-like sponge
- 2 cm in diameter.
- Bristly/spiny surface and easily recognizable
- Brick red in color.
