Info
The herbivorous damselfish Stegastes limbatus only occurs in some places in the Western Indian Ocean, such as the islands of La Réunion, Mauritius, Madagascar and in the Strait of Mozambique.
Although the island of Mayotte is "only" about 685 kilometres away from Madagascar, there are no evidence of Stegastes limbatus to the Comoros and the Glorioso Islands.
This robust territorial damselfish is found in its adult life stage mainly in the surf zones of coastal rocky areas where sufficient seaweeds and aquatic plants grow..
The body colour of Stegastes limbatus is blue-black with black scale outlines. The scales on the neck and side of the head are often blue, the lips are whitish.
There is a small black spot near the lateral line origin.
A wide white bar is sometimes present in the middle of the sides (possibly in connection with courtship behaviour = wedding dress).
Aquaristic husbandry data are not available.
