Plectorhinchus multivittatus is a sweetlips with wavy horizontal lines on the face, dense yellow spots that form diagonal wavy lines on the upper sides, a silvery belly with smaller yellow spots and yellow fins.

Plectorhinchus multivittatus differs from the yellow-striped sweetlip (Plectorhinchus chrysotaenia), which is found in the waters of the east coast of Australia, in its location and denser yellow body markings.
